Pepicha is a perennial Mexican herb that is similar to cilantro, but even better! The flavour is complex with notes of cilantro and citrus. Unlike cilantro, pepicha thrives in hot weather: no need to worry about bolting as the flowers are edible too.

I love to use pepicha in place of cilantro in Mexican dishes such as salsas and tacos. It is also delicious in salads and eggs. I actually prefer the flavour to cilantro, and it's so much easier to grow in the heat. It's a short-lived perennial in warmer zones, otherwise it's easily grown as an annual.

Pepicha can be dried for winter use. It holds its flavour well when dried.

Pepicha is native to Mexico, specifically the Oaxaca region, which is known for its incredible food. It is used in the Oaxacan dish, Sopa de Guias, zucchini soup made with squash blossoms and vines. It is used to add flavour and colour to rice and poached fish. Pepicha falls in the class of quelites, or wild greens.

It also has medicinal uses.

Growing Instructions

Sow seeds shallowly indoors in late spring 4-8 weeks before last frost, and plant outside May-June. These plants like heat, so use a heat mat or place flats in a warm spot, like on top of the fridge. Take care not to break the seeds. Seeds can also be direct sown in late May and June.

Growing conditions: Full sun to part shade. Well-draining garden soil. Can be grown in pots.
